James  earned a Juris Doctor Degree from Creighton Law School, with honors in 1995. 

He has practiced in the  state courts in Omaha and Sarpy County, Nebraska, the U.S. District Court and Bankruptcy Court, and at the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Judicial Circuit.

James has won several appellate cases at the Nebraska Supreme Court, the Nebraska Court of Appeals and the US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

Prior to becoming an attorney, James served in the Marine Corps and managed computer facilities for McDonnell Douglas.
